Organic manure is plant- and animal-derived material applied to soil to raise its organic-matter content. Unlike a straight chemical fertilizer, which supplies a measured dose of one or more nutrients directly to the crop, manure works largely through the soil: organic matter improves structure and aggregate stability, increases the soil’s capacity to hold water and to hold nutrients against leaching, and feeds the microbial population that makes nutrients available to roots.
That difference matters most where soils have been cropped hard for decades. Repeated application of soluble fertilizer without any return of organic matter leaves soil that compacts, crusts, drains badly and needs a larger fertilizer dose each year to deliver the same yield. Restoring organic matter is slow and cumulative — it is a multi-season investment rather than a corrective spray — which is why manure is best planned into the rotation at land preparation rather than applied in reaction to a visible problem.
Where it fits in the season
Organic manure is normally incorporated during land preparation or applied as a basal dose, giving it time to break down before the crop’s peak demand. It complements rather than replaces the rest of a nutrition programme: manure builds the medium, micronutrients correct specific deficiencies, and plant growth promoters act on the plant at defined stages.
