A pergola gives a garden something it usually lacks: usable shade with the sky still visible through it. Built as a run of posts carrying an open roof of beams, it turns a path into a walkway worth taking slowly, or an exposed corner into a seating area that can be used through the middle of the day.
It is also a structure for growing on. Planted with climbers, the open roof fills in over a few seasons until the shade is green rather than merely built. Material, span and orientation are decided per site — the direction the sun crosses matters as much as the dimensions.

How a project runs
