Botanical and biological insecticides are derived from plant extracts or living organisms rather than synthesised chemistry. Their practical value in a modern programme is threefold: they generally act through several modes at once, which slows the development of resistance; many are softer on beneficial insects and pollinators than a broad-spectrum synthetic; and they typically carry shorter pre-harvest intervals, which matters on vegetables and other crops harvested continuously.
They ask more of the operator in return. Coverage has to be good, because most work on contact or ingestion rather than moving systemically through the plant. Timing has to catch the vulnerable stage of the pest. And the effect is often a reduction in population over days rather than an immediate knockdown, so a field walked the morning after and judged on dead insects alone will read as a failure when it is not.
Use them inside a programme, not alone
Insect control works best as part of integrated pest management: monitoring so that treatment follows an actual threshold rather than the calendar, rotating modes of action so no one pressure selects for resistance, and treating the crop as one part of a field that also contains natural enemies.
